Abashiri is a very quiet town. The concourse outside the main rail station was virtually empty, even under broad daylight.
▼ 兜路都要去網走，目的只有一個：去坐破冰船出海看流冰。不幸天氣太暖，海面沒有流冰。破冰船公司也算均真，乘客買票前會講明當天流冰情況，沒冰看船票價錢有節候扣。坐了幾個鐘火車，一場來到，沒流冰看也照上船去。
The only reason for us to make a detour of our route to this quiet town was that we wanted to get on icebreaker Aurora to view the drifting ice on the sea. Unluckily, the day we went there was too warm for any drifting ice to be seen. The icebreaker company is fair though. It is their policy to inform potential customers whether there is any drifting ice to be seen. A lower fare is charged on the day when drifting ice is absent. Since we came a long way, we got on the icebreaker anyway.
